“Right now, we have about 400 applications for Thanksgiving food baskets,” said Envoy Donna Griffin of the Ridgecrest office of the Salvation Army. “We expect to have a total of about 600 applications. Our numbers increase daily with people new to the area.”

Applications are still being accepted at the Salvation Army office, located at 151 N. Downs St., from noon to 2 p.m. The deadline is Friday, Nov. 15. “People can also sign up for Toys for Tots at the same time. They’ll need to bring identification, proof of address, proof of income for everyone in the household and proof of each child in the home, such as a Medi-Cal card,” said Griffin.

“We also need sponsors. You can do that by either making a financial donation or adopting a family for the holidays.” Call the office at 760-375-7219 for more details.

The Salvation Army also needs donations of money and/or food for the baskets, such as turkeys, hams, potatoes, yams, stuffing and other basics. These can be dropped off at the Salvation Army’s office. Financial donations may also be sent to the Salvation Army at P. O. Box 189, Ridgecrest, CA 93556.

The annual Coat Drive is also on, so if you are cleaning out your coat closet and find coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, hats or gloves you no longer use, please consider donating them to the Salvation Army. “We especially need children’s size coats, up to Size 14, for those who are out in the cold who need a nice warm jacket,” said Griffin.

“Churches, schools and businesses are encouraged to do food drives throughout the holiday season, for the food baskets as well as to restock the food pantry.

“Our goal is to make sure no one goes without for Thanksgiving,” said Griffin. “I’d like to encourage everyone who has an extra place at their table to invite someone they know who will be alone.

“We’d like to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving, and to thank the Lord for our many blessings.”
