DCOA kicks off season with Pops Concert
The 2013-2014 season of the Desert Community Orchestra will begin with a free Pops Concert on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at the main stage of the Desert Empire Fairgrounds.
This annual outdoor event has become a Ridgecrest tradition, and people of all ages are encouraged to attend. Attendees are encouraged to come early and bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and eat on the grass or enjoy food and beverages purchased from the Bur-roughs Music Boosters.
The Pops Concert this year is entitled “American Salute” and will feature music celebrating America such as “Liberty Fanfare,” “A Salute to Big Bands,” “Surfin’ USA,” “Fanfare for the Common Man,” “American Salute,” “Armed Forces Salute,” “Victory at Sea” and more. The David Hodgson Singers will also join the orchestra on some numbers. The concert is free but donations are welcome.
Conductor Robert Martinez will once again lead the orchestra this season. Martinez has led the Desert Community Orchestra since 1994. His engaging personality, leadership and penchant for surprises never fail to delight audiences of all ages.
After the Pops Concert, the Desert Community Orchestra has an action-packed remaining season.
On Dec. 14 the orchestra will present a Christmas concert at the Parker Performing Arts Center, Burroughs High School.
The winter concert will be on March 1, 2014, at James Monroe Middle School, and the season will culminate on May 3, 2014, at BHS with the final concert featuring the winners of the annual Young Artists competition as soloists with the orchestra.
Be sure to join the orchestra members for all of their concerts, beginning with the free Pops Concert on Sept. 28.Story First Published: 2013-09-25
