Dent pleads to two felonies

Long-time Ridgecrest resident and volunteer Clarence Llewel Dent, 52, pleaded nolo contendere (no contest) to two felony counts of child sexual abuse. His next court appearance will be Sept. 17 at 8:30 a.m. in Bakersfield’s Metro Divi-sion, for sentencing.

Arrested April 26 at 9:59 p.m., Dent is being held in the Lerdo Pretrial Facility in Bakersfield. His bail is set at $1,500,000.

He was convicted on one charge of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child. These are both felonies.

Originally, he was also charged with 11 other counts of lewd and lascivious acts, plus a second count of continuous sexual abuse, but these 12 other felony charges are listed as dismissed by the court in the interest of the furtherance of justice.

In addition to prison time of at least three years and heavy fines, Dent faces having to register as a sex offender after his release.
