Staples to close Oct. 5

A manager of the local Staples office supply store confirmed this week that the Ridgecrest outlet will be closing Saturday, Oct. 5.

Tammy Tuipala of the local chain said she could not comment on the reason, but acknowledged that the store has seen a sharp increase in traffic since rumors began circulating more than a week ago.

“At this point I don’t believe it will make a difference,” said Tuipala. “My understanding is that corporate has made the decision to close the store and that’s the final word on the matter.”

Speculation in the community blamed everything from out-of-town tenants to the steady rise in online shopping. Although Staples’ corporate office did not respond to a request for comment, online news releases show that the company made the decision earlier this year to close 52 locations.

Although numbers for the local store were not available, aggregate data shows that while in-store shopping has decreased more than 3 percent, online sales have increased more than 8 percent.

But while office supplies will still be available online, locals note that the store closure marks one less option for residents looking for the professional copying and computer services provided through the store.

Officials from City Hall reportedly worked with local realtors to see if Staples would consider renting a smaller, less-expensive space. But Tuipala said that is not currently an option.
