As the News Review was preparing to go to press Tuesday afternoon, the Secretary of Defense’s office announced that the number of furlough days for DOD employees would be reduced from 11 to 6.

Although China Lake officials did not comment on the decision, the sentiment expressed by the rank and file was one of partial relief. The loss of a workday, and the pay that went with it, every Friday will now end on Aug. 16 instead of Sept. 20.

“Today’s decision by the Pentagon to cut furlough days is welcome news,” said Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who visited the Indian Wells Valley Monday to address concerns and solutions for the regions fiscal challenges, which were further impacted by the implementation of furloughs. “However, as I’ve said all along — furloughs should not have occurred at all, especially at Defense Working Capital Fund installations. And I will continue to make this case to Secretary Hagel and the administration throughout this fiscal year and the next.”
