Arson suspected in Sunday fireThe Kern County Fire Department issued a statement Sunday morning regarding a fire that destroyed two structures — including the main snack bar and office structure at the Kerr McGee athletic complex on South Downs Street.

According to a press release, firefighters arrived on the scene early Sunday morning to find flames consuming two structures — the snack bar and a storage facility across the street.

The single-story storage unit was fully involved upon arrival, and chalked up to a total loss. The two-story structure sustained only moderate water damage on the lower floor, which housed concession sales. The upper floor, which held office space, was destroyed.

Both fires were knocked out within 40 minutes of arriving on scene.

A fire investigator was called to the scene to determine the cause.

Although officials have not corroborated any leads, reports on social media place two young females at the scene at the time of the fire.

Ridgecrest Police Chief Ron Strand said that his department is assisting with the investigation, and has asked anyone with information to call 760-499-5100.

At press time officials had not yet provided estimates for the cost in damages — which include both structural and content loss. However, members of the youth organizations noted that thousands of dollars in gear and equipment destroyed by the fire.
