CLOTA announces Armstrong scholarship winner

CLOTA announces Armstrong scholarship winnerThe Community Light Opera and Theatre Association announces that the winner of the 2013 Ken Armstrong Scholarship is Zachary Winegardner.

The $500 award is given each year to a Burroughs High School graduating senior who has excelled in the performing arts.

The scholarship was established by the Armstrong family in loving memory of Ken Armstrong, who cheerfully supported CLOTA by building sets, hauling scenery to and from performance locations and performing various other essential behind-the-scenes tasks.

This year’s versatile winner has been involved with the Burroughs High School Concert and Marching Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Drumline Color Guard and the Desert Community Orchestra. He has been a member of the Burroughs Drama Club and has supported the Drama Department both as a musician and as technical crew.

Zachary is Senior Class vice-president and a member of the Burroughs Interact Club (Rotary International’s service club for students ages 12-18), holding the offices of president, treasurer and publicity manager. He is a member of the California Scholarship Federation and part of the Burroughs Honors program.

In 2011, he was selected to be part of the Links Crew, which mentors underclass students and holds fundraisers each year for charities such as Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army. He has participated in Powder Puff cheerleading all four high school years and is currently a member of the varsity tennis team.

His community activities in-clude lending his musical talents to his church (as both a pianist and an organist) and to the Salvation Army’s Christmas bell-ringing fundraiser with the unique twist of substituting his saxophone for traditional bell ringing. He has been a member of the Boy Scouts of America since 2003 and holds the rank of Eagle Scout.

Zachary plans to major in music education and become a teacher.
