Driver fails to elude police officer

Ridgecrest Police Sgt. Justin Dampier encountered a problem at 1:15 a.m. on June 26 when he tried to stop a green van for a traffic violation in the 500 block of West Graaf Avenue.

According to police records, the driver of the suspect vehicle failed to yield for the emergency lights and continued westbound on Graaf. He also failed to stop for the posted stop sign at the intersection of North Sierra View Street, before turning right and continuing northbound on Sierra View.

The driver finally yielded in the 1600 block of North Sierra View Street, near the intersection of West Atkins Avenue.

Responding officers assisted with a felony traffic stop. The driver and sole occupant, Milton Toussaint, 37, was taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, a loaded firearm was found in close proximity to suspected narcotics. Convicted felons are prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. A significant amount of several kinds of suspected narcotics was found, along with evidence indicating the property was intended to be sold.

Toussaint was arrested and taken to Central Receiving Facility, Bakersfield, where he was booked on eight felony drug and weapons charges as well as DUI, driving with a suspended license and evading a peace officer. His bail has been set at $150,000.

His next hearing is set for July 9 in the Mojave Branch, Kern County Superior Court.
