Urgent request for blood donations

In response to Houchin Community Blood Bank’s urgent request on June 18, area donors are urged to participate in a blood drive to be held at the Kerr McGee Center on Wednesday, June 19, from noon to 6 p.m.

For more information call Christina at 760-677-9100.

“It is a very rare day when we have to go outside our own community for blood supplies, but Houchin Community Blood Bank has had to seek O- blood from sister blood banks around the state.

“We really need to take care of our own, especially during the summer when supplies are traditionally low for all blood banks” said Carola Enriquez, director of community development.

People with O-, A-, B- and O+ blood in particular, and those of any blood type willing to give platelet donation a try are urged to plan to come in to donate very soon.

“Blood components on the shelves are what save lives,” Enriquez added.

New and repeat donors are welcome, and those who don’t know their blood type will receive a card in the mail with that information.

Donors are welcome to stop by or call for an appointment at 661-323-4222.

There are two donation centers this summer.

The center at 5901 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield, is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The new center at 11515 Bolthouse Drive, Bakersfield, is open Monday and Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Friday and Saturday.

Both centers are closed Sundays.

Mobile drives are booked around Kern County and listed at www.hcbb.com.

More mobile drives could be booked this summer. For information on hosting a blood drive or to find out if a mobile drive is located in your area, call Enriquezat 661-378-6224 or e-mail her at cen
