Smith-Sims to face first-degree murder in death of infant

Ridgecrest resident Kylor Smith-Sims, is in custody in Lerdo Pretrial Facility in Bakersfield without bail, on charges of murder in the first degree and assault resulting in great bodily injury on his 10-week-old son.

The suspect’s trial is set for Aug. 26 at 8:31 a.m. in Bakersfield’s Metro Division.

According to a Ridgecrest Police Department press release of March 15, 2012, officers responded to a call that an infant was not breathing in the 500 block of West Atkins Avenue that March 6.

The infant, Travian Gabriel Smith-Sims, was transported to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, where several significant injuries were discovered. He was then flown to Loma Linda Medical University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy conducted on March 14 revealed that the infant died as a result of blunt force trauma, thus making the death a homicide.

On March 15, 2012, Kylor Smith-Sims was arrested and subsequently transported to Central Receiving Facility in Bakersfield and booked on charges of homicide and physical abuse of a child.

According to the Kern Count Superior Court Criminal Calendar, Smith-Sims has a readiness hearing set for Aug. 16, 10 days before the scheduled jury trial. He is also on probation following a 2011 conviction for drunk and disorderly.
