Desert Fair Ground’s Quilt Challenge fabric now available

Attention quilters! The fabric for the Desert Empire Fair’s annual Quilt Challenge is now available in the fair office.

Each entrant will receive a fat quarter of the challenge fabric, which must be worked into the front of a small quilt, at least 18 by 18 inches but no larger than 30 by 30 inches.

Complete rules and the challenge fabric are available in the office, 520 S. Richmond Rd., and a special entry form must be filed out. There is a $3 fabric fee, but no separate entry fee is required.

Judging for the challenge quilts will be on the Danish system, with each entry being judged on its own merits and awarded the appropriate placing – first, second, or third place, or honorable mention. Quilts will be judged on creativity, quilting technique, continuity of the quilt’s theme and use of color.

There will be additional ribbons for “Best Challenge Quilt” and for the “Peoples’ Choice” voting to be held during the fair.

Use of the fair theme is not required for the challenge quilts, but a “Best Use of Theme” ribbon may also be given. The 2013 fair theme is “From Wagon Wheels to Ferris Wheels.”

The finished challenge quilt must be delivered to Mesquite Hall on the fairgrounds on Sept. 26, 4-8 p.m.; or Sept. 27, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the same time that all regular quilt entries are due.

This year’s Desert Empire Fair will be Oct. 17-20. Start sewing now!
