Family Fun coming to fairgrounds May 4,5
Games and activities ranging from the tried-and-true duck ponds, ring tosses and sponge tosses to laser tag and bounce houses will be featured at the Desert Empire Fair’s 2013 Family Fun Fest on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.
Family Fun Games, with prizes and ribbons, will echo old-fashioned family and company picnics. Some of the activities offered will be beanbag tosses, football throws, a toilet-paper toss, ping pong ball tosses with varying targets, a cakewalk and a chalk drawing area.
Inside Mesquite Hall will be arcade-type games like wheel spins, disk drops, 7-11 and soda-bottle ring tosses.
Competitive events such as relay races, sack races, and Clean Up Your Own Backyard will also be going on both days.
Returning from last year will be the popular frozen T-shirt contest, in which the contestants vie to see who can get into a solidly frozen T-shirt first.
Other contests will include a Jello-eating contest, a duct tape-newspaper fashion show, spoon and egg races and a team egg toss.
All of these activities are free with admission.
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary’s bingo booth will be available for the bingo fans in our valley.
Bubbles on Water will be on the grounds, as well as pony rides. The Adrenaline Rush obstacle course bounce house, with tunnels, log jams, up and overs and a giant inflated slide will be featured. A laser tag course will occupy much of Mesquite Hall.
These activities will have additional charges, with the bounce houses priced on a ticket-per-ride basis – five tickets for $5, 12 tickets for $10, and 30 tickets for $20. Laser tag will be $7 per game, and Bubbles on Water $8.
On Sunday Cinco de Mayo will be highlighted by local band Guerrero Musical taking the main stage at 1 p.m. The band is known for its Norteña, Cumbias, Ranch-eras and Durangense styles of music.
No need to go hungry at the Fun Fest — the Friends of the Fair will load their grill with hamburgers, brats and hot links, accompanied by chips and popcorn, topped off with – not grilled – cotton candy. IWV Youth Softball will provide hot dogs, nachos and drinks. Jo Jo’s from Trona will have barbeque and sandwiches, including catfish and shrimp PoBoys, plus potato salad, fries, and fountain drinks. Tony’s Ice Shack will be handy for a cooling treat, and Roy’s fresh lemonade will provide funseekers with refreshing drinks.
The Family Fun Fest will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 4 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 5. Admission is $3 for anyone 13 and older and free for 12 and younger. Parking, provided by the Boy Scouts, is $2.
