Test pilot to speak at Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast
You won’t want to miss this year’s Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, on May 2, at 6:30 a.m. at the Kerr McGee Center, when test pilot and aircraft designer Russell O’Quinn will be the featured speaker.
Tickets are $5 each, and can be purchased at your church, Bread of Life and the door. Doors open at 5:45 a.m., breakfast is served at 6:10 a.m. and the program starts at 6:30 a.m.
O’Quinn, an 84-year-old South-ern Californian, spent more than five decades as a test pilot and aircraft designer. Initially employed by Douglas Aircraft Company after a stint in the Air Force, O’Quinn left in 1965 to establish a civilian flight-test company. He acquired the first civilian-owned fleet of jet fighters and converted them to high-performance test beds for the nation’s aerospace industry and the Department of Defense.
In 1969 and again in 1972 the U.S. State Department called on O’Quinn and his crews to conduct major airlifts of food supplies first to Nigeria during its civil war and second to Bangladesh after a civil war and devastating typhoon.
In 1984 LIFE magazine featured O’Quinn as one of the top test pilots in the United States. He is still an active test pilot, waiting for the next project.
O’Quinn says he has achieved every dream of high flight he had as a boy, but he warns that those dreams aren’t all they are cracked up to be. Unless God is the author of your dreams, you have a tragic disappointment waiting for you.
O’Quinn plans to devote the rest of his life to giving people a “briefing” more valuable than any he ever gave as a training pilot. He says he is not a preacher or theologian but has done a lot of research with the conclusion that Jesus Christ is the “unspeakable gift of God” who came to redeem you and me.
“Russell O’Quinn is a gifted and dynamic speaker who has been featured at national conferences and is frequently requested at governors’and mayors’ annual prayer events nationwide,” said a spokesperson.
“You will be captivated by his unique gift of communication and humor as he shares the story of a man in pursuit of his dreams.”Story First Published: 2013-04-24
