Ridgecrest students recognized at 2013 Kern County Regional Science Fair

Ridgecrest students showed outstanding exhibits at Kern County’s 25th annual Regional Science Fair on March 20, with five Ridgecrest students invited to exhibit at the state level, and with most of the others bringing home ribbons.

Seven students from Saint Ann School and nine from Murray Middle School participated. The Ridgecrest youngsters were among nearly 650 Kern County fourth- through 12th-grade participants.

Some first- and second-place finishers will compete in the 62nd annual California Science Fair to be held at the California Science Center in Los Angeles on April 15-16.

All students who represented Saint Ann School received awards. First-place winner Andrew Ostrum was invited to participate at the state level, with Cassandra Thayer (second)?and Giselle Ramos (second) invited as alternates.

Also invited to participate at the state level was first-place finisher Sydney Marler of Murray School. “This is a huge honor,”?said a school official.

The state qualifiers by category were Molecular Biology and Microbiology, first place, Andrew Ostrom of St. Ann’s Catholic School; Plant Biology, first place, Sydney Marler, Murray Middle School; Food Chemistry – Carbohydrates, second place, Cas-sandra Thayer and Giselle Ramos, St. Ann’s Catholic School.

Participants at the elementary-school level are not eligible to go to the state science fair, but show great promise for future years, said school officials.
