Two big evening events set for April 13 at Desert Wildflower Festival
The multivenue April 12-14 Ridgecrest Desert Wildflower Festival spans five locations, and two of them feature evening fun for residents and visitors of all ages.
At the Desert Empire Fair-grounds, the Saturday 6-10 p.m. Beer Wine and Food Walk offers high-powered entertainment by Theresa Spanke, Amarillo and Daniel Brown together with a wine glass, eight beer or wine tastings and barbecue and hors d’oeuvres for the single admission price of $30 per person, $50 per couple (senior/active military $25/person, $45/couple).

At the Historic USO Building, Saturday night is family movie night with a 6 screening of a classic Western movie – filmed at Red Rock Canyon – plus popcorn, soda, ice cream, sandwiches and hot dogs will be available (admission free, www.HSUMD.org, 760-375-8456).
During the daytime all weekend, the Historic USO Building will have lectures that begin with Bill Zerby’s “All About Geocaching” at 9 a.m. Saturday. Anyone wanting to participate in the geocaching challenge should sign up in the lobby.
The Ridgecrest/Inyokern area is considered one of the densest concentrations of geocaches anywhere, with 60 around Inyokern alone and more to be added for the Desert Wildflower Festival.
Other festival venues are the China Lake Naval Museum of Armament & Technology; Kerr McGee Center for vendors Saturday and Sunday and free 1 p.m. watercolor workshops conducted by Cheryl McDonald both days; and Maturango Museum for the Annual Wildflower Exhibit Friday to Monday.
“The Thrill of the Hunt: Two Seasons of Rare Plant Treasure Hunts” will be presented aat the museum by Kathy LaShure at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, with car caravans leaving Saturday and Sunday at 10:15 a.m. for wildflower viewing locations.
