Acclaimed novelist Robin Maxwell to appear at two April 3 events

Ridge Writers will celebrate Tarzan’s 100th anniversary at their Wednesday, April 3 meeting at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church with a presentation by Robin Maxwell, author of “Jane: the Woman Who Loved Tarzan.” The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited and admission is free.

The first version of the Tarzan story written by a woman and authorized by the Edgar Rice Burroughs estate, Maxwell’s tale marks the centennial of the original “Tarzan of the Apes.” The award-winning novelist will screen Tarzan and Jane images from the last century while spinning the adventures of her remarkable heroine, a 1905 paleoanthropologist who finds herself deep in the jungles of West Africa where she discovers the key to humanity’s past, and an all-consuming love, in one extraordinary man.

According to a rave review on Huffington Post, “Everything works: the characters are iconic, yet drawn with such love and care you could be completely ignorant of the classic Jane and Tarzan story and still fall in love with these two. Plus, the period details are spot-on.”

Maxwell specializes in historical fiction about women ahead of their time. Her best-selling “The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn” has been published in 16 languages and is now in its 24th printing.

Maxwell grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Tufts University and practiced occupational therapy for several years before moving to Hollywood to become a parrot tamer, casting director and finally screenwriter. Working for the major studios and networks she wrote comedy, drama and even feature animation for Disney.

Maxwell will also talk about Tarzan and Jane and women in the Victorian and Edwardian eras on Wednesday afternoon for the second session of the Ridge Writers’ “Read the Book, Meet the Author” series, a three-book teatime discussion group meeting on first Wednesday afternoons at My Enchanted Cottage and Tea Rooms. To participate in these separate events, sign up at and order titles through Red Rock Books.

Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church is located at 633 Las Flores Ave. To learn more about Robin Maxwell, see robinmaxwell.com.
