A much-anticipated presentation of budget projections is the highlight of tonight’s meeting of the Ridgecrest City Council, scheduled for 6 p.m. in Ridgecrest City Council Chambers.

The executive summary and discussion of 2012-13 budget projection will be presented by newly hired Finance Director Rachelle McQuiston.

State raids on local coffers have contributed to the dismal state of city finances. Those concerns were raised again when Interim City Manager Dennis Speer revealed a new $1.3-million structural deficit between revenues and expenditures last fall.

A February report from the auditor was even more grim, warning the city that its chronic overspending, borrowing from the wastewater fund and lack of reserves conflicted with recommended financial practices.

McQuiston told the council last week that she did not see any cause for alarm. She will follow up by presenting her findings and conclusions to the city.

Other items on the agenda include recognition of Account Clerk Virginia Johnson as employee of the month.

Consent calendar items include an agreement to provide preliminary engineering on South Sunland Street in anticipation of improvements, approval of the quarterly investment report and authorization of proclamations.

The public is invited to attend. Proceedings are scheduled to be broadcast live on Mediacom channels 6 and 41.
