BIGGEST CHECK EVER —“This is the biggest donation we’ve ever received,” Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert President Doug Lueck (right) tells Norman George (seated in upholstered chair). Other HSUMD boardmembers watching George present the $20,000 check are (from left) Nick Whisnant, John Abbott, Andrew Sound and Mike Leming. The money was a bequest from the late Nancy George, who consulted with her son before her death about her wish to make substantial donations to some of her favorite nonprofits. Norman said his mother wanted to help significantly but not to stipulate how the money should be spent. Lueck said 20 percent of the donation would probably go to help with restoration of HSUMD’s Veterans Memorial Building, with the rest “giving us a stable financial base on which to operate for many years to come.”
