Help sought for Eagle Scout project

Come on out and help a local youth with his Eagle Scout project — cleaning up an illegal dump. The public is invited to help on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Jonathan Heier, a Boy Scout in Troop 848, has chosen for his Eagle Scout project the cleanup of a canyon off South China Lake Boulevard near Highway 395.

Called “Shooter’s Canyon,” the area in question has been an illegal dumping ground for some time. Heier is concerned that the area could become polluted with toxic substances in addition to the already-dumped debris.

“The canyon I will be cleaning up is particularly vulnerable because of its location, out of sight near 395,” wrote Heier. “By volunteering, people of the community can help resolve this problem and create a clean environment for the next generations to enjoy.”

He asks that volunteers bring work gloves and eye protection.

Signs will be posted on South China Lake Boulevard to indicate where the project is being held.

Heier will work with the Bureau of Land Management, which will provide trucks and trailers to haul the collected debris to the landfill.
