Geraldine Yvonne Anderson Lewis
Geraldine Yvonne Anderson Lewis, also known as “Jerry Lewis,” a longtime Antelope Valley resident, died peacefully on the morning of Jan. 4. She had recently celebrated her 90th birthday.
A memorial service for Mrs. Lewis will not be held as 34 members of the family gathered at the Heritage Inn and Suites in Ridgecrest at Christmas-time to celebrate “Mom’s 90 Wonderful Years of Life.”
A native Californian, Geraldine Anderson was born in Pasadena on Dec. 25, 1922. She attended Pasadena schools and graduated from John Muir High School in 1941. She met the love of her life, Walter John Lewis, Jr. (also known as Johnnie) when just a freshman in high school. They married on Feb. 21, 1942. The new Mrs. Lewis resided in Altadena while her husband served as a Navy Seabee in the Pacific during WWII.
After the war, the couple and their son Richard and daughter Judi moved to Littlerock to embark on a life as turkey and alfalfa ranchers. They resided on the senior Lewises’ ranch on 130th Street East. A third child, Janet, and a fourth child, Jeffery, were born during the ranching years.
A change of employment to General Telephone Company by Walter Lewis facilitated a move to Palmdale. Then came a move to Lancaster. With a family of four children Jerry busied herself as a homemaker for most of her life.
In 1959, Walter was transferred to Pomona. Jerry loved the change from a desert climate and enjoyed planting and caring for a flower garden of gardenias, azaleas and camellias. A habitual whistler, Jerry could be heard whistling a happy tune, day and night, as she tended her home.
For the past four years, she has resided at High Desert Haven Assisted Living in Ridgecrest, where she was loved by residents and staff members. Her family said their mom and grandma will be fondly remembered for her sweet spirit, her quiet elegance and her thick, pure white, perfectly coiffed hair.
Jerry is survived by her son and his partner, Rich Lewis and Teresa Tauzer of Bayside; her daughter, Judi Roberts of Claremont; her daughter and husband, Ernie and Janet Quier of Ridgecrest; her son, Jeffery Lewis of Palmdale; 12 grandchildren and their spouses; 15 great-grandchildren; her older sister, Viola Gardner of Yucca Valley; two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Walter John Lewis, Jr.
In accordance with her wishes, she has been cremated. Her ashes have been placed with her husband’s and will be scattered at sea on a date determined by her family.
Condolences may be sent to Judi Roberts, 203 South Mills Ave., Claremont, CA 91711 or Janet Quier, 648 N. Scott St., Ridgecrest CA 93555. Submitted by
