Basic rifle marksmanship school offered

Sierra Desert Gun Club of Ridgecrest staff members will give a Basic Rifle Marksmanship Training course begining Saturday, Jan. 26.

Students taking the course must have enrolled up at Kerr McGee Center this past Saturday.

The Sierra Desert Gun Club is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to more and better shooting activities through safe, sane and effective use of firearms in hunting and target shooting.

Material to be covered in the course will include a thorough indoctrination in the principles of safe gun handling, principles of marksmanship and the proper care and cleaning of firearms.

All instructional material and required equipment, including targets, safety equipment, ammunition and .22-caliber target rifles will be furnished by the Sierra Desert Gun Club.

Classes will be held for 10 afternoons from 1-4:30 p.m. at the club’s range facilities on the Ridgecrest Gun Range Association facilities located about six miles south of Inyokern on Brown Road (old Highway 395). The dates are: Sat. 1/26; Sat. 2/2; Sun. 2/3; Sat. 2/9; Sun. 2/10; Sun. 2/24; Sun. 3/3; Sun. 3/10; Sun. 3/24. (There may be make-up days if windy conditions are bad.)

The school is conducted as a community service by the club to foster safe gun handling, rifle marksmanship and sportsmanship. It is offered to all residents older than 12 , living in the Indian Wells Valley and adjoining areas. The course will be a combination of classroom instruction and firing of .22-caliber target rifles on the club riffle range. Approximately 15 hours of rifle range activity and 12 hours of classroom instruction and field demonstrations are planned as well as a final Match.
