Zabel exhibit grand opening on Jan. 18
The China Lake Museum Foundation will host a three-month exhibit of paintings from famed cowboy artist Larry Zabel.
The exhibit’s grand opening will be at the China Lake Museum, Friday, Jan. 18, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35 each. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Those interested in attending should RSVP to 760-939-2916.
The exhibit is a tribute to Zabel, who lost his valiant battle with chronic myeloid leukemia at age 82 on Sept. 11, 2012.
A former employee of the Technical Information Department at China Lake, he left many friends in the Indian Wells Valley with fond memories in their hearts and wonderful paintings on their walls.
Just before his death, he finished “Naval Aviation Centennial 2011,” a painting marking the 100-year celebration of naval aviation.
This painting, which was presented to China Lake’s commander, will be on display. as will a collection of his work from the Navy Art Collection and paintings on loan from local collectors.
The museum owns several Zabel paintings that will also be on display. Over the years, Zabel donated numerous paintings to CLMF fundraisers benefitting the U.S. Naval Museum of Armament and Technology. Although many of his paintings were by commission, Zabel also generously donated many works to support nonprofit organizations, whether they supported wildlife, the arts, conservation, education or medicine.
Many of his paintings earned awards, with his work appearing in such prestigious places as the White House, the U.S. Senate Building, the Smithsonian, the National Archives, the Pentagon and the U.S. Navy’s Combat Art Collection.
