Janice Felsen peacefully slipped away from her loving family in Ridgecrest, on Dec. 3, 2012.
Janice was born in Buffalo, N.Y., where both she and her husband Oscar graduated from Buffalo State University with teaching degrees. She taught for several years while Oscar served in the Army and adjusted to civilian life upon his return from Korea. They made their home in Buffalo and raised two daughters.
In 1971 the Felsens took a great step and moved to Ridgecrest. Janice resumed her teaching career in Sierra Sands Unified School District, where she taught for 25 years. She was also the president of the Desert Area Teachers’ Association from 1987-1988, and received the Mentor Teacher Award from her peers in 1983-1984.
Janice enjoyed gardening, camping, reading, playing Mah Jongg and humiliating her friends and family playing Scrabble. Her love of reading lead her to the Ridgecrest Library book club. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Sarah Schiller.
She is survived by the love of her life, Oscar Felsen, her husband of 55 years, who has supported her as she was a wife, mother, and teacher and who eased her passing as her caregiver in the last months of her life.
She is also survived by her brother Harvey (Nancy) Schiller and sister Riva (Arnold) Berleant; her daughter Rachel Felsen-Richards and grandsons Bert and Rudy Richards; daughter Carla (Ray) Nierlich; and dear friends John and Audrey Yacos.
Arrangements are with Holland & Lyons Mortuary. At Janice’s request, no memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Ridgecrest Regional Hospital Hospice, 1653 Triangle Drive, Ridgecrest, CA 93555.
