Man arrested for reckless shooting

Kenneth C. Curnow

An intoxicated man shot a firearm into the air near a home on South Porter Street where a police officer was attempting to serve an arrest warrant late in the evening on Thursday, Nov. 29.

According to a Ridgecrest Police Department report prepared by Sgt. Justin Dampier, RPD officers responded to an address in the 1600 block of South Porter Street at about 10:15 p.m., in an attempt to serve an arrest warrant.

While standing on the porch of the residence, Officer Kyle Cushman observed a vehicle approaching on S. Mahan St. Officer Cushman shined his flashlight on the vehicle as it passed. The vehicle passed Officer Cushman’s location and then conducted a u-turn before stopping adjacent to where the officers were located. The driver exited the vehicle, exhibited a firearm, and shot a single shot into the air. The suspect then fled the scene.

The vehicle was tracked to a residence in the 1600 block of S. Mahan St. and the suspect identified as Jayson Whiteside, 39, a Ridgecrest resident. The investigation showed Whiteside was intoxicated at the time of the shooting and while he discharged the firearm into the air, he was not attempting to shoot Officer Cushman.

Whiteside was subsequently taken into custody and booked at the Kern County Jail on charges of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.
