Community supports KidSpree
To the Editor:
On behalf of Altrusa International Inc. of Indian Wells Valley and 102 children from Ridgecrest and Inyokern, it is my pleasure to thank this community for your support of the fourth annual Altrusa KidSpree held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Walmart and Kmart. For those of you who are not familiar with KidSpree, the purpose is to purchase warm school clothing and shoes for eligible children.
We are so grateful to the numerous organizations, businesses and individuals who contributed funds to this event, as well as all of the volunteers who helped the children shop. We also wish to thank Walmart and Kmart for the 10-percent discount and the store personnel for all of their assistance.
Not to be forgotten are the directors and site supervisors from Southern Sierra Boys & Girls Club and High Desert Leapin’ Lizards after-school programs. They made the selection of the children to be included in the KidSpree, ensured that all consent forms were completed in a timely manner and recruited many volunteers.
Then this year, for the first time, breakfast was served to the children thanks to the food donations by McDonald’s, Jack in the Box and Burger King. And we wish to thank the News Review and the Daily Independent for printing all of our news releases and photos and for covering the event.
Altrusa’s fundraisers (Christmas Tree Lane on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1-2, at Santa’s Art Shop and our Holiday Home Tour/Bazaar/Bake Sale on Thursday, Dec. 8) not only provide Altrusa with our part of the funding for the KidSpree, but also allow us to contribute to various other organizations, such as the Women’s Center/Shelter, Literacy Council, Salvation Army Food Basket Program and many others. So everyone who supports these fundraisers helps Altrusa help others!
We hope that the clothing provided by the Altrusa KidSpree will not only help keep these children warmer this winter, but warm their hearts as well. We do believe that it was an enriching experience for them, as many children and parents expressed their sincere appreciation.
It was a most rewarding experience for us as well, and we hope to have an even bigger KidSpree next year!
