Kiwanis thanks Walk-A-Thon supporters
To the Editor:
The Kiwanis Club of Ridgecrest formally acknowledged the contributions of students, businesses and individuals at the Walk-A-Thon Award Ceremony held at John’s Pizza Nov. 9.
This ceremony, hosted by Kiwanis Board Members Ying Ming Lee and Virginia Henry, marked the 25th anniversary of the Kiwanis Walk-a-Thon event in Ridgecrest. More than $12,000 was awarded to local schools. From the received funding, the Kiwanis Club also supports scholarships for local high school seniors.
Each participating school receives a check for their share of the proceeds along with gift cards or gifts for the top five solicitors in their schools.
Schools include, in the order of their level of contribution (high to low), Gateway Elementary, Richmond Elementary, Faller Elementary, Las Flores Elementary, Inyokern Elementary, Ridgecrest Charter School, Pierce Elementary, Burroughs High School, and Immanuel Christian School.
The local club is quite fortunate to have many businesses donate their time, locations, and/or monetary donations as well. These include McDonald’s (the 2012 Walk-A-Thon business of the year!), High Sierra Auto, Valley Cabinet, TJ Frisbee, Gary Charlon State Farm Insurance, Enron Systems, New Directions Technology, Inc., Jacobs Technology, Taco Bell, Heritage Inn, Alta One Federal Credit Union and Starbucks.
The following individuals and groups contributed to the success of the Walk-a-Thon: the City of Ridgecrest, Explorers, Radio Club, Venture Crew 848, Girl Scout Troup 226, Cub Scout Pack 848, Mike Fehring, Angel C and Key Club Members, Linda Fisher and the Alta One staff, Shirley Kennedy and staff, Randy Crane, Jim Wojciehowski and Wayne and Kathy Silva, as well as other members of the Kiwanis Club.
The following students solicited the most funding for their local schools. Will Novascone from Richmond Elementary was the top solicitor and won an X-box 360.
Takota Hartman from Inyokern Elementary with second place won a Wii. Kaida Walters from Faller Elementary took third place and won an iPod Nano.
Ashley Harrington from Pierce Elementary took fourth place and a Nintendo DS. From Faller Elementary, Shay Lynn Albritton from Pierce Elementary won fifth place and a $75 Walmart gift card!
The Kiwanis Club is grateful for the generosity of businesses, families, neighbors and friends who contributed to the award ceremony and the Walk-A-Thon as we continue to serve the children of the world, including those in our local schools.
