The Exchange Club of Ridge-crest has announced a major donation from two local contractors that ensures restoration of the much-loved star on B Mountain. Still needed are funds to maintain the star once it has been renovated.

According to Organizer George T. “Andy” Anderson, at a Nov. 8 meeting two electrical contractors submitted proposals for reconstruction and repair of the site and the star. Earlier bids submitted had been too high to be considered practical.

Bob Dickson of RED Electric and Darryl Grace of South Bay Electric not only submitted a cost estimate of only $50,000 for the complete project, but also volunteered to donate all materials and labor to complete the project!

“These two men, born and raised in Ridgecrest, owners of the two businesses, thought enough of this icon and this community to do this for the people of Ridgecrest,” said Anderson. “The people of Ridge-crest are so amazing. You give them a project that’s worthwhile and they just come out of the woodwork, wanting to help.

“I, as a relative newcomer to Ridgecrest (19 years) never cease to be amazed by the love and generosity of its citizens.”

He estimates that the repairs will be done in time to light the star for Christmas.

The Exchange Club is still collecting funds to set up a maintenance fund for this iconic symbol.

The club is also challenging all Ridgecrest fraternal organizations and service clubs to match the Exchange Club’s contribution of $2,000.

Anyone wishing to donate to this project can drop off checks at the office of the News Review, 109 N. Sanders St., or Desert Valleys Federal Credit Union, 100 E. Ward Ave., or to any Exchange Club member. For direct pickup of your donation, call Anderson at 760 384-1551. Checks should be made out to NV/CA District XC Charitable Foundation. Please put “B Mountain Star Fund” on the memo line.
