Cystic fibrosis campaign in full swing

Cystic fibrosis campaign in full swingRidgecrest’s schools and businesses have been gathering support for ongoing cystic fibrosis fundraising efforts since October. Many more events are will be happening during the remainder of November with a special momentum focused on the Great Strides Walk for CF on Saturday, Dec. 1.

The Ridgecrest Cystic Fibrosis Fundraising committee is sponsoring its sixth year of fundraising to fight cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening inherited disease that affects the lungs, digestive and reproductive systems of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

Many of Ridgecrest’s ongoing CF fundraising efforts are happening during November in the community’s schools and businesses. The event lineup includes:

“Change for a Cure” – Pierce Elementary School’s annual event, last week of November.

Plastic Bracelets — being sold by Las Flores Elementary School students.

Assembly presentation and coin collection contest – Gateway K-Kids sponsoring Nov. 26 presentation by Julie Frisbee, parent of two daughters with cystic fibrosis, followed by Gateway School students’ coin collection.

St. Ann coin collection drive – Mrs. Frisbee also gave a presentation to St. Ann’s fifth graders, who have also begun their own collection drive.

Murray Middle School Coin collection – Advancement Via Individual Determination first period students organized a coin collection during the past two weeks.

“Penny War” – a surprising twist on the familiar spare-change campaign, one of several school-wide fundraisers planned by AVID students from Burroughs High School on the quad during the Burroughs lunch break. Students will have an opportunity to honor their favorite teachers by depositing their spare change in jars.

“$1,000 dollars and 100 feet” – event where BHS students hope to meet their goal of contributing 50 walkers to participate in the Great Strides Walk.

Great Strides Walk – occurring Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Cerro Coso Community College track. Registration starts at 9:15 a.m., with the Walk beginning at 10 a.m.

Businesses and corporations are welcome to become sponsors of the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk. Sponsors may do so in the following categories: $1,000 Gold Level, $500 Silver Level, $300 Bronze Level, $250 Benefactor, or $100 Supporter.
