Winners of DEF Parade Awards

This year’s Desert Empire Fair Parade on Oct. 20 featured 47 entries. Kathy Armstrong of the Friends of the Fair pronounced it a great success.

Winner of the DEF Board of Directors’ Best Entry was the beautiful Oasis Garden Club float, which also won Best Float.

Other sweepstakes trophies included:

•Best Band: Burroughs High School Marching Band

•Best Equestrian: “Just Corning Around,” mounted pair, Juanita Greiger and Sheila Gerard

The Friends of the Fair Special Recognition Award went to the High Desert Stars Youth Cheerleaders.

First-place trophies included:

•Native Education: Cherokee Community of Central California Ridgecrest Area

•Antique Car: Carol Newton and Dennis Cox

•Walking/Motorized: Ridgecrest Regional Hospital

•Truck: George and Linda Pruitt’s Army truck

•Autos: Joan and Jim Hodges’ replica “Repuga,” Gary and Denise Potts’ classic auto, the Sweet Adelines musical auto and Model T Ford Club from Bakersfield

•Emergency vehicle: Community Emergency Response Team

•Equestrian group: Old West Mounted Lawmen (Doug Lueck, Mike Thomas, Doug Parlet, Steve Cornett, Bill Shoenhorst, Mike Woodward and Rex Walraven)

•Mounted Color Guard: Katie Leighton

•Floats: Nazarene Church, Community Light Opera and Theatre Association

•Musical Novelty: Joan Renner

•Novelty: Marcus Mansfield, “Street Sweeper.”

Second-place trophies went to Gear Grinders Four-Wheel Drive vehicles.

“Numerous entries did not want to be judged, they just loved being in the parade,” said Armstrong.

“We’re very proud these people have shown such great community spirit to revive our 60-year-old parade.”
