Gem & Mineral Show this weekend
The Indian Wells Gem & Mineral Society’s 57th annual Gem & Mineral Show will be held at Mesquite Hall, Desert Empire Fairgrounds, Nov. 3-4, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days. Ad-mission is free.
At least a dozen vendors with rock- and jewelry-related items for sale, exhibits, a silent auction and door prizes will be there. The society’s sales booth features spectacular geodes from Mexico and Morocco, to be purchased by the pound and sawed open at no extra charge. “Kids love our cloth grab bags filled with interesting ‘treasures’ as well,” said a spokesperson.
At Sage Hall Friends of the Fair (Over the Hill Grill) will have egg, ham and cheese bagels available for breakfast and a variety of sandwiches, including the buffalo tri-tip special, barbecued chicken, hot sausage and hot dogs plus taco salad and a surprise dessert for lunch. The show’s guided field trip will leave the fairgrounds on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and caravan to the club’s claim, Rainbow Ledge, to collect plentiful jasper and agate. There is a $5 fee if the participant is older than 16. Four-wheel drive is not necessary, but reasonable clearance for desert roads is. Bring water, lunch and a collecting bag.
The show has many opportunities for interesting and easy Christmas shopping. (A cut geode can serve at two gifts).
The club has a complete lapidary shop, open to members. Meetings are held the fourth Monday each month (except De-cember, July and Au-gust) at 7 p.m. and are open to guests. (Ask about Pebblepups). The clubhouse is located at 527 W. Upjohn Ave. For more information, leave a message for John DeRosa at 760-375-7905.Story First Published: 2012-10-31
