Veterans invited to barbecue in the park

In celebration of Veterans Day, a barbecue in LeRoy Jackson Park is planned for veterans and their families for Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or “as long as we’re having fun,” according to Organizer Peggy Breeden.

A parade had been planned; however, it was cancelled because of an insufficient number of entries. Not to worry — Breeden arranged with all the organizations that had submitted entries for the parade to instead be at the park to help celebrate the veterans.

“There will be antique cars, and the cheerleaders will do skits to honor the veterans,” said Breeden. “There will be lots of food and a good time for all who come out.

“We will be serving hot dogs, potato chips, macaroni salad, apple pie and lemonade to the veterans and their families. If you like, just come and thank our veterans. We hope to see you there!”

The issue appears to be “too many parades too close together,” said Breeden. “We had four parades in four months. That’s just too much. All the parades are great, but they need to be more spread out over the year.”

Veterans will have a chance to get together, swap stories and memories and generally have a great time. The event is designed to thank all veterans and active-duty service personnel for their service to our country.
