BHS announces Homecoming activities
Homecoming 2012 is upon us at Sherman E. Burroughs High School. Certain events are for students and staff only. Other activities are meant for the entire community to enjoy. BHS encourages community support.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Vacation Getaway.” Spirit Week themes will be as follows:?Monday, Oct. 8, Columbus Day, no school. Tuesday, Oct. 9, “B-Mountain Clothes,” seniors only. Wednesday, Oct. 10, “Sports Jerseys Day.” Thursday, Oct. 11, “Tourist Day.” Friday, Oct. 12, “BHS Pride Day.”
The float-building theme for freshmen is “New York City.” For sophomores it’s “Beach.” Juniors have the theme of “Rainforest Escape,” while seniors will depict “Campout at B-Mountain.”
The rally theme will be “Burros Homecoming.” The dance themes will be “A Whole New World” and Arabian Nights.
On Monday, Oct. 8, the class of 2013 will participate in the annual painting of B-Mountain. Students will leave BHS at 8 a.m. and will spend approximately four hours changing the “12” to “13.” This event is for seniors only, and all participants must have completed all required permission forms.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, volleyball games, BHS vs. Victor Valley will occur at the gym at 3:30, 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. All games are open to the public.
A mini Powder Puff Rally will take place Wednesday, Oct. 10, 11:45 a.m. The Powder Puff players will compete in a “hit drill” while the boy cheerleaders will compete in a dance competition. Only BHS students with valid student IDs will be allowed to participate in this activity.
Powder Puff games will occur that day on the field at 4 p.m. The first of three Powder Puff games will begin at 4:30 p.m. Games are open to the public. General admission is $3, with children 7-12 admitted for $1, and children 6 and younger and BHS ASB cardholders free.
On Thursday, Oct. 11, float building will take place on the Quad, 3-11 p.m. Classes build their homecoming floats in a competition for spirit points. On Friday, the four floats are towed around the track before coronation. Only BHS students with valid student IDs will be allowed to participate in this activity.
A Homecoming Rally will take place in the gym, 1:40 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12. The Pep Squad will host the rally, with several exciting performances planned, including cheers and dances from Powder Puff cheerleaders. Only BHS students with valid student IDs will be allowed to participate in this activity.
The parade of cheerleaders, floats, and the Top Ten court will begin at 6 p.m. on the field. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at approximately 6:45 p.m. The event is open to all.
The public is invited to the Big Game, which will start on the field at 7 p.m. when the Burros take on Granite Hills High School. The Homecoming dance will be the next evening, Oct. 13, in the gym, 8-11:30 p.m. The dance is hosted by the BHS Cheerleaders. Only BHS students wearing valid student IDs and guests who have been pre-approved by the administration will be allowed to participate in this activity.
Also on Oct. 3, the Alumni and Community Pancake Breakfast will take place in the Multiuse Room starting at 9:00 a.m. “Enjoy a pancake breakfast with the principal,” said a spokesperson.
Featured will be student-led tours and a “State of the School” address, as well as opportunities to purchase spirit gear from the Sherman Shack and get access to all yearbooks ever published at BHS. Each participant is asked to donate $5, with proceeds going to support programs on campus.
A Burros Boosters Golf Tournament will take place at 8 a.m. This fundraiser to support BHS Athletics will cost $80 per person. The two-person scramble ncludes greens fees, golf cart, two mulligans, competitions for closest to the pin on Holes 6 and 11 and the longest drive on Hole 7, plus a raffle ticket.
The tournament will conclude with a 1:30 p.m. lunch at Casey’s Steaks and Barbecue. Items to be raffled include a Giant mountain bike, two Kodak digital cameras, a Callaway Razr Fit Driver and a Phillips 50-inch high-definition TV.Story First Published: 2012-10-04
