Calliing all zombies for Halloween event

October 13 will be a lucky day for Halloween festivities. The Southern Sierra Boys & Girls Club will host a fundraiser in LeRoy Jackson Park for kids of all ages.

The event will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with a Zombie Walk — a costume contest for zombies and scary critters of all sorts. Prizes will be awarded in four categories: Zombie of the Year, Best Zombie Family, Zombie Youth and Zombie Hunter of the Year.

The Dead Zone Run will start at 6 p.m. An entry fee of $10 also gets each contestant a belt with three flags or streamers. Volunteers dressed as zombies, werewolves and other scary creatures will chase the contestants and try to get their flags. The contestants’ goal will be to run the gauntlet and retain as many flags as possible. Prizes will be given, and all ages may join in.

“Last year we had over 100 entries for the costume contest,” said Organizer Trisha Miller, CPO of the Boys & Girls Club. “This year, we’re hoping to more than double last year’s number.”

Anyone who would like to be a zombie chaser needs to call Miller a week before the event. A background check will be done on all volunteers, plus there will be a meeting of all volunteers to explain rules and regulations.

On the big day, vendors in the park will sell Halloween-related items. The Boys & Girls Club will have a booth selling Zombie Walk mugs, hand-knitted creature hats and more. A nails technician will do special “blood-spattered” nail effects. Other vendors will have various surprises.

The event is planned to end between 8 and 8:30 p.m.
