Larry Gene Davis
Larry Gene Davis passed away May 21, 2012, in Fresno, Calif., following a long battle with failing health. He was 69 years old.
A memorial for Larry and a reception for family, friends, and co-workers will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the home of Ken and Debbie Newton, 1036 W. Larry was born June 13, 1942, in Lindsay, Okla., the third child of Paul Sr. and Louise Davis. His father died in a traffic accident when Larry was very young. His mother remarried, and in 1952 the family migrated west, first to Chandler, Ariz., then to Delano and Pond in the San Joaquin Valley, eventually arriving in Ridgecrest in 1957. After high school Larry lived for a while in Illinois with his sister Bertha and her husband, Estle Todd, but returned to Ridgecrest in the 1970s.
In 1976 Larry married the love of his life, Patricia Depue (Smith). Their reunion produced two children, Marie and Michael.
Larry was a chef by trade, and over the years he cooked at many Ridgecrest eateries, including Iorillo’s (now Farris’ Diner), Midway Café, Denny’s and the Cottage. For a time he was kitchen manager at Clancy’s Claim Co., and for many years he ran the kitchen at the original Texas Cattle Co. Pat worked as a watress at many of the places.
At one point, Larry and Pat tried their hand at running their own restaurant, CB’ers Haven, at Pearsonville. They lived in other states at times but always made their way back to Ridgecrest.
After working for many years in the food business, Larry and Pat went on to manage apartment complexes in Ridgecrest and Westwood, and an RV and mobile home park in Bishop.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother and father and his step-father, Buford L. Newton. He is survived by his wife Pat Davis of Wasco, daughter Patty Cawley of Alabama, daughter Deanna Burton of Tennessee, son Eddie Depue of Ridgecrest, daughter Marie Davis of Madera, son Michael Davis of Westwood, 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. brother Paul Davis Jr. of Riverside, sister Bertha Todd of Prescott Valley, Ariz., brother Cliff Newton of Ridgecrest; brother Ken Newton of Ridgecrest, sister Rose Patton of Riverside and numerous nieces and nephews.
