PD gets grant from ABC

The Ridgecrest Police Depart-ment has been awarded a $25,639 grant from the California Depart-ment of Alcoholic Beverage Control, to be used in the current fiscal year.

“Consumption of alcoholic beverages by persons under 21 years of age is heavily associated with crimes such as driving under the influence, batteries, sexual assaults and other alcohol-related incidents,” said Chief Ron Strand.

He said the grants will help fund additional efforts to reduce availability of alcohol to minors.

Strand said the operations conducted by his department include a program that provides training to employees who handle alcohol, use decoys to check whether licensees are selling to minors, and “shoulder tap” — a method where a minor solicits adults to buy them alcohol.

“The Ridgecrest Police Depart-ment and ABC believe that aggressive enforcement, mixed with public education, will successfully limit the access of alcohol to minors and improve the quality of life in Ridgecrest,” said Strand.
