TAKING ACTION TO FILL A NEED: Burroughs High School graduate and fixture the local stage Ryan Loewen responded to drastic cuts to the local performing arts programs by forming the Ridgecrest Musical Enrichment Society — which has raised more than $20,000 to support youth since 2009. That money has gone toward sending vocalists and instrumentalists to music festivals, helping purchase new equipment and establishing two memorial scholarships for graduating seniors. Loewen and a handful of other charter members — with the support of scores of other local talent and hundreds of loyal audience members — stage several productions each year to raise funds. Loewen said he wanted to match the efforts of Sierra Sands — which has kept some fine arts offerings despite budget cuts. "Our goal is to help these programs stand on their own so that someday they can operate without fear of being cut," said Loewen.
